Optimal design for the Bradley-Terry paired comparison model

چکیده
Abstract Paired comparisons are a popular tool for questionnaires in psychological marketing research. The quality of the statistical analysis of the responses heavily depends on the design, i.e. the choice of the alternatives in the comparisons. In this paper we show that the structure of locally optimal designs changes substantially with the parameters in the underlying utility. This fact is illustrated by elementary examples, where the optimal designs can be completely characterized. As an alternative maximin efficient designs are proposed which perform well for all parameter settings.

A Generalized Bradley-Terry Model: From Group Competition to Individual Skill
The Bradley-Terry model for paired comparison has been popular in many areas. We propose a generalized version in which paired individual comparisons are extended to paired team comparisons. We introduce a simple algorithm with convergence proofs to solve the model and obtain individual skill. A useful application to multi-class probability estimates using error-correcting codes is demonstrated.
متن کاملFitting loglinear Bradley-Terry models (LLBT) for paired comparisons using the R package prefmod
This paper aims at introducing the R package prefmod (Hatzinger, 2009) which allows the user to fit various models to paired comparison data. These models give estimated overall rankings of objects or items where each subject (respondent/judge) makes one or more comparisons between pairs of objects (items). The focus is on the loglinear Bradley-Terry (LLBT) model, the loglinear formulation of t...
متن کاملRegularization methods for item response and paired comparison models
1. Introduction Commonly, item response models and paired comparison models are treated as different model classes, suited for different data situations. However, there is a great similarity between item response data and paired comparisons and, accordingly, between the respective modeling approaches. Item response data appear when test persons face a certain number of items which are designed ...
متن کاملScore-scale Decision Tree for Paired Comparison Data
A new decision tree method for analyzing paired comparison data is proposed. It finds the preference patterns of the subjects based on some covariates. A scoring system is implemented first and the total scores associated with each object for each subject are counted. The GUIDE regression tree for multi-responses is then applied to the score outcomes and the average scores of the objects are us...
متن کاملHow to Analyze Paired Comparison Data
Thurstone’s Law of Comparative Judgment provides a method to convert subjective paired comparisons into one-dimensional quality scores. Applications include judging quality of different image reconstructions, or different products, or different web search results, etc. This tutorial covers the popular Thurstone-Mosteller Case V model and the Bradley-Terry logistic variant. We describe three app...
